Man with a Pan

June 21, 2011

Deviating from the normal skate, tattoos and music trifecta for a moment. This is a lovely collection of essays by and about “men who cook”. This isn’t as weird as it sounds as it explores the food culture we inherit from our parents (and their parents), and how that affects both what we eat and how we eat as adults. Plus a lot of good recipes and classic cook book references. It also explores men with pans.

Bicycle Diaries

November 23, 2010

When in Rome and all that. I have been doing a bit of bicycle riding in China, so this book has been fun to read. A fan of earlier Talking Heads, I think David Byrne is an awesome thinker. His series of diary posts come from around the world on various tours, with each city explored by bike. Along the way he muses about bicycles, urban centers, life and everything in between. Making Sense.

Popism

July 18, 2010

This is an awesome account of the music and art scene in New York in the 60’s from the eyes of Andy Warhol and his space The Factory. Everyone that made a difference is there, and 1000’s of names you don’t know too.

Street Knowledge

June 10, 2010

King Adz (author of the very spot on “Urban Cookbook”, a journey across 5 cities, 25 style leaders and 50 recipes) is set to publish his second book, Street Knowledge. No doubt an excellent look into street culture of past and present. Publication: September 2010.

Chasing Cool

June 4, 2010

I have been rereading “Chasing Cool” by Noah Kerner, published in 2007. It is an interesting manifesto on what “cool” is, who has it, and how they got it. With a lot of references to street culture and music, and the main message being that cool needs to start inside a company, it was worth a second read.
